Sanderling Waldorf School Winter Spiral
~ Winter Spiral ~
Even in Southern California where we live, seasons turn. We feel the days become shorter and the air becomes colder. At this time of year, we are again reminded how much we long for and appreciate Light.
Many cultures and religions have celebrations of Light at this time of year. The spiral walk is a festival that is practiced in most Waldorf Schools. Sanderling Waldorf School will celebrate ‘ Winter Spiral ‘ on Friday, December 2nd this year.
Faculty carefully prepare this spiral of living greens in the Eurythmy room. The room will be darkened and filled with fresh green scent. In the center of the spiral is a tall candle and we hear gentle music in the background. One by one, each child walks the spiral with an apple candle which is unlit. Once the candle is lit at the center, the child walks carefully back through the spiral and finds a place on the spiral to set the apple with the now-lit candle down. More children walk, the brighter the room becomes.
This spiral walk celebration was invented originally by the anthroposophical doctor, for Camphill Villages, to give community members a way to picture the need for light in the darkness. Walking through the spiral symbolizes ‘ search for light within & around us.’ When you see a child carefully walk the spiral, we wish they also walk their lives with steady feet. We wish they find light in themselves and become light to shine the world.
Sanderling Waldorf School will host ' Community Walk ' on Friday, December 2nd at 6:10 pm. We would look forward to seeing the old friends as well as the current community members.
