Sanderling has a long tradition, as do many Waldorf Schools, of coming together and celebrating spring with the May Faire. Here in Southern California, “King Winter” does not bring harsh winters, and yet we experience the change of seasons. Especially this year, after much rain and cooler temperatures, we will all rejoice in celebrating spring. ✨

The earliest May Faire celebrations were held to honor the changing seasons from winter to spring, from darkness to light. The peasants in Europe brought in trees from the woods and danced around them celebrating spring. ✨

In ancient Roman times, a pine tree was brought to the “Temple of Cybele” in Rome as a spring ritual. Mayday is associated with Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. Garlands of flowers were gathered and carried to her temple. Youth danced around columns decorated with flowers.✨

The “May Queen” is representative of the Goddess Flora, the Goddess of Spring. Later, the celebration incorporated a maypole with ribbons and young girls danced around it wearing garlands of flowers. Hence, Sanderling children get to make flower crowns to wear during the festivities. ✨

May Faire celebrations are full of hope and renewal. As a Waldorf school, we close out our festivals every year with this whole school celebration. Rituals, traditions, and ceremonies are touchstones in our year and enrich the lives of our children and even ourselves as adults. ✨
