Our Story
Our Approach
Sanderling Waldorf School is North County San Diego's only accredited Waldorf school, serving children from 16 months through 8th grade in Vista, California.
Research consistently shows that children learn best through hands-on experience, movement, meaningful relationships, and creative work — not passive screen time. At Sanderling, we take that seriously. Our classrooms are completely screen-free and media-free from early childhood through 8th grade. Instead of devices, children use their hands: they draw, build, knit, garden, play instruments, and write by hand. These aren't enrichment extras — they are the curriculum.
The result is children who can focus, think independently, and engage deeply — graduates who enter high school and college with strong academic foundations, genuine curiosity, and the self-discipline that comes from years of real, unhurried learning.

Our Mission
Our mission is to foster in each child the capacity for self-knowledge grounded in a lifelong love of learning. Recognizing each individual as a unique expression of head, heart, and hands, we seek to engage the whole child through a developmentally appropriate curriculum that addresses the physical, emotional, and intellectual aspects of a child. In the classroom, at special events, and through seasonal festivals, our parents, teachers, and staff work together to engage the minds, enliven the imaginations, and strengthen the wills of our students.
Waldorf Education
The New York Times sparked national media coverage with its front page story on why Silicon Valley parents are turning to Waldorf education. This film picks up where that story left off.
Our Philosophy
Child-Led
We trust that every child is a capable, curious learner when given time, space, and freedom to explore. Our educators act as gentle guides — following the child's lead, honoring emergent interests, and allowing the world to spark inquiry and deep joy.
Waldorf Wisdom
Rooted in Waldorf education's understanding of child development, we recognize each child as a unique expression of head, heart, and hands. Seasonal rhythms, artistic activities, movement, and imaginative play are woven into every day.
Social-Emotional Growth
We scaffold children's social and emotional learning — supporting self-regulation, empathy, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making within the warmth of a close-knit school community.
Academic Excellence
Our curriculum is developmentally sequenced to meet children where they are. Students learn Spanish and German from 1st grade, engage in hands-on science, and graduate with the capacities for creative, responsible thinking.

Years of Excellence
Our educators are trained in Waldorf pedagogy, early childhood development, and their subject areas. At Sanderling, teachers stay with their class from 1st through 8th grade — building the kind of deep, consistent relationship that allows them to truly know each child as a learner and as a person.
